Sean has lived in Raleigh, NC since 2011, following stays in Albuquerque, NM, Savannah, GA, New Haven, CT and NYC, NY. He established Sean J Tobin, Architect in 2013, and formed Tobin StudioPLLC in 2015.
As an architect, his focus primarily on residential design and small commercial projects. He is passionate about sustainable design, and he tries to integrate high performance assemblies and sustainable materials during the project. He educates builders, owners and users of the projects about sustainable design, and also give public presentations on the subjects of architecture and sustainability. He and his family strive to keep a small footprint, and enjoy growing food year round in their yard.
As a consultant, Sean has supported other architects as a designer, drafter, or Project Manager, depending on the needs of the project.
Finally, although he now focuses on smaller works where he can interact with the decision makers directly, Sean has over 20 years of experience in the architecture and sustainability fields, with project experience ranging from single family residential (both mid to high range), multi-family, commercial, higher education, elementary schools, health care, and government facilities.
In the past, Sean has worked for several award winning firms including the Central Park Conservancy, Ferguson & Shamamian Architects and Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City, Mark P. Finlay Architects in Southport, CT, Dawson Wissmach Architects in Savannah, Georgia, and most recently Merrick & Company, based in Colorado, where he lead a department of 35 architects and interior designers completing projects throughout the United States.
In addition to work and family, Sean teaches part time as an adjunct instructor at Wake Technical Community College and at North Carolina State University. In the past, he taught at The University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) and the Savannah College of Art & Design. He has been an invited lecturer / presenter at several conferences on architecture and sustainability, and has been an invited juror at The University of Notre Dame, SCAD, and NCSU. Sean has participated in several awards juries, including the New York State AIA awards.
Sean is a Registered or Licensed Architect in 6 states, a LEED AP+ (Accredited Professional), and a Green Globes Professional. In addition, he is a volunteer Living Building Ambassador for the International Living Future Institute, and has studied Passive House certifications. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture & History of Art from Yale University, and a Master's of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame.
